100% Recyclable Shoes are World’s First “Landfill-Free” Sneakers
Shoes, by their very nature of bearing all of our weight and being the buffer between our tender feet and the hard surfaces of the world, get worn out, many times much sooner than we’d like them to. And for the most part, they just end up as one more item filling up the dump (or landfill, if you prefer that kinder, gentler, term), because by the time we’re ready to let them go, they really aren’t suited to being worn again via a thrift or secondhand store.
So it turns out that some 300 million pairs of shoes end up in the dump each year, in the U.S. alone, which adds up to quite a bit of material that can never be recovered or recycled or reused.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a shoe that was designed from the get-go to be possible to be recycled, and that could also be considered a truly sustainable sneaker? As it turns out, there is, and it’s not only 100% recyclable, from the laces to the sole, but it’s also possible to turn those old kicks into new kicks by grinding, melting, and pelletizing the materials from the old ones.
This 100% recyclable, landfill-free shoe is a remix of Gary Gagnon’s original eco-sneaker, the REMYXX, which first launched in 2012 and produced over 1000 pairs of these green footwear that were well received by their buyers. Now renamed ReKixx, Gagnon is back with another iteration of the shoe, and is looking to crowdfunding to bring these sneakers to market.
“ReKixx are casual comfortable lifestyle sneakers, in strong colors with clever designs for all types, ages, and genders. They are manufactured using a unique mix of materials that look and feel like canvas and rubber but are made entirely from a propriety blend of lab certified recyclable materials. With the recycling symbol prominently displayed on the uppers and the bottom sole, you can show the world that you choose to walk the green way supporting eco-friendly behaviors for a sustainable future. It also tells the collection agencies and recycling processors what they can do with worn out ReKixx to give them a second life. ReKixx are Sneakers with a Purpose™.”
Not only are these sneakers made from 100% recyclable components, but they are proudly branded as being recyclable and green, enabling the eco-conscious fashionista to display their values and carry the message of green living and recycling with every step they take.
Backers of the new ReKixx Kickstarter campaign at the $50 and up level will be the first to get to wear these recyclable shoes, the “landfill-free” sneakers, which come in a variety of shapes and styles, from slipons to Mary Janes to high tops. After the campaign, these eco-sneakers will still only cost about $65, which is a pretty darn good price for a quality shoe that can be worn without any eco-guilt.« This Ethical Workout Wear Empowers Women in South Asia The Secret to Ending Hunger?
